What in the world is
“As I struggled to write my first novel, I kept looking down at the coffee stains on my desk and in them I’d envision myself having landed on a small, secluded island; one that few people had dared to explore and even fewer had ever conquered.
As I fought my way through creating my first novel, I quickly accepted that there would be no shortcuts to reaching my goal. There would be no glorious escape from coffee-stain island, no salvation to the sweet drips of publishing that lay beyond, without first conquering the island itself.”
When I began writing my first novel in May 2017, I scoured the internet looking for writing-hacks to help me through the process. But everyone (from published professional to hopeful amateur alike) seemed unable to provide a simple, step-by-step, guaranteed process for getting the job done.
“Everyone is different,” they said. “Find a process that works for you and stick with it,” they cooed, as if it were that easy.
All forms of advice seemed to boil down to one thing: writing a novel is hard work and there’s no greater knowledge to offer other than plop your ass down and write the damn thing.
Well, one year later, having done exactly that, I can confidently look back and say that I would’ve benefited from a more surefooted path.
Future, first-time novelists would thrive with a simple, guided, adjustable map for conquering Noveldom without having to scrounge for advice to hack at the process like a medieval butcher.
Writing your first novel (much less another) can be excruciating work, and the consensus for why that is, seems to be that there is no reliable method for getting it done.
Advice ranges from writing by the seat of your pants (“pantsing”) to creating detailed outlines (“outliners”); writing what you can each day to meeting an exact word count.
I wanted to find the most reliable way to write my novel. And when it was finally said and done, I realized two things could’ve significantly helped me out:
1. DIRECT INSIGHT INTO THE PROCESS
So that I and all future novelists could see what the process requires each time a novel is compiled, and
2. A RELIABLE MAP
For how best to navigate the daunting territory of Noveldom in order to achieve my ultimate goal: to write a novel I can be proud of, even if it never sees the chaos of a professional publishing floor.
